"I blink my eyes and the moment is over. I guess another day has passed. But it's just another day. It's just another day. Watching girls on the street. . . "
"Well that's alright with me," Patrick said, turning to look at his friend. Jake grinned, slapping Patrick on the back before heading back down the alley. It was time to get some work done if they wanted to eat tonight.
The moon was high in the sky, as two blocks later they stood outside her door. They simply stared at it. Neither went to knock. Patrick looked wearily down the cobbled street, rubbing his arms in a feeble attempt to warm himself in the chill night air. A distant church bell struck the hour. On cue the door opened and the girl stood there staring out at them, her grey eyes almost white in the faded light. She stepped into the doorway, leaning slightly against it. Her long brown hair fell into her face as she cocked her head to one side, looking over the two guys. Satisfied with what she saw, she reached into her jean pockets and pulled out a pair of keys, looking once more between the two of them before tossing the keys to Jake.
Jake immediately turned on his heel and trotted across the street to the parked car. Patrick followed behind him, the girl close on his heels, after she had locked the front door.
Soon they were all in the car, on their way, to where Patrick wasn't sure. But he trusted Jake and that was all that mattered. After a quarter of an hour had passed, the girl, who had her feet out the open window, reached over and tapped Jake on the shoulder. Jake turned the car off the main road and headed towards the woods that bordered it. Jake opened the door and got out. Patrick and the girl followed suit. As soon as Patrick had slammed the door shut, he heard a howl not too far off. His first instinct was to climb back into the car and hide but as he pulled on the handle he realized that it was already locked. The girl passed her faded grey eyes over him once again before heading to the trunk and unlocking it. Patrick briefly wondered if he could hide inside of it.
The girl reached in, pulling out two pistols and a shotgun. She tossed a pistol to each of the guys, pulled out a set of gleaming silver knives, and before Patrick could make a move, slammed the trunk shut. And like that he was locked back out of the car. Patrick sighed as the girl rolled up the sleeves of her leather jacket and slipped the knives into the holders around her forearms.
The howl came again. Patrick looked nervously to the dark between the trees of the woods. It was closer this time. The girl walked past him into the woods, Jake close behind her. Patrick followed simply because he was too afraid to be left alone.
It wasn't long before the howl was right in front of them and Patrick could see a hazy, dark form in the faint moonlight that was peeking through the trees. The thing came towards them and it was now evident that whatever it was it was growling. Patrick gulped and took an involuntary step backwards. To the right of him the girl simply raised the shotgun, took aim and fired. The creature howled, this time in agony, as it leapt forward towards the girl. Patrick took another step back as he watched in disbelief as the girl dropped the shotgun, instead drawing out one of the knives. At the last moment she sidestepped the massive beast and reaching out slit its throat. The scent of singed hair reached Patrick's nose as he backed up once again, this time into Jake. He yelled out, whipped around and slapped Jake across the face.
"I'm sorry. . . " he finally blurted out when he saw who it was. But Jake wasn't looking at him. He was looking past him to where the monster had collapsed on the ground. Patrick turned around just in time to watch the form change shape.
The threesome made their way over to the fallen creature and Patrick looked down into the misted green eyes of his twin brother.
